RMAN Backup and Recovery A Comprehensive Guide to Oracle 12c

YouTube video

Introduction

Welcome to the Malik034 YouTube channel! In this video series, we will dive deep into RMAN (Recovery Manager) backup and recovery scenarios for Oracle 12c. If you have watched my previous videos, you might be familiar with the concepts of cold backup, hot backup, and how to restore data files and control files. In this series, we will focus solely on RMAN backup and recovery, covering various scenarios such as restoring control files, data files, system data files, undo data files, and redo logs. So, let’s get started!

Key Points

  • This video series will cover different RMAN backup and recovery scenarios for Oracle 12c.
  • The scenarios include normal backup and recovery, restoring control files, restoring different types of data files, registering redo logs, and restoring tablespaces.

Getting Started: Backup and Recovery Scenario 1

Let’s start with the basics of RMAN backup. In RMAN, we can take a full backup of the database, as well as separate archivelog backups. Additionally, we can take incremental backups, including level 0 and level 1 backups.

Step 1: Connect to RMAN

To begin, connect to the RMAN prompt using the appropriate command.

Step 2: Set Control for Auto Backup

It is recommended to set control for auto backup on, as it automatically backs up the control file whenever a backup is taken.

Command: backup database plus archivelog

Step 3: Perform Full Database Backup

By executing the backup command mentioned above, RMAN will perform a full database backup. If you don’t specify a format, it will default to the default location.

Step 4: Perform Archivelog Backup

RMAN will also perform an archivelog backup along with the full database backup.

Step 5: Complete the Backup

At this point, the database backup is completed, as well as the archivelog backup. You can verify this by checking the backup log files.

Key Points

  • RMAN allows for full database backups, archivelog backups, and incremental backups (level 0 and level 1).
  • It is important to set control for auto backup on to automatically back up the control file.

Restore and Recovery Scenarios

Now that we have covered the backup scenarios, let’s move on to restore and recovery scenarios using the backups we just created.

Step 1: Restore Control Files

In case of control file corruption or deletion, we can restore the control files using the backup created earlier.

Step 2: Restore Data Files

We can also restore different types of data files, such as normal data files, csocs data files, system data files, and undo data files.

Step 3: Register Redo Logs

RMAN allows us to register redo logs with different states, such as current, inactive, or active. This step ensures the proper functioning of the redo logs.

Step 4: Restore Tablespaces

Lastly, we can restore tablespaces using the backups created during the backup process.

Key Points

  • RMAN provides various restore and recovery scenarios, including control file restore, data file restore, redo log registration, and tablespace restore.
  • These scenarios ensure the integrity and availability of the database.

Conclusion

In this article, we have covered the basics of RMAN backup and recovery scenarios for Oracle 12c. We learned how to perform full database backups, archivelog backups, and incremental backups. We also explored restore and recovery scenarios, including restoring control files, restoring data files, registering redo logs, and restoring tablespaces. By following these steps, you can ensure the safety and availability of your Oracle 12c database.
